The Monarch girls varsity basketball team defended their near perfect record with a 59-42 win over Fossil Ridge. The girls were behind early in the game, but rallied together to pull off the win, kicking it into high gear after halftime. Senior Sally Sroge thinks that the girls need to work on “how they start, coming out strong and boxing out right away.”
The team was led in points by sophomore Jasmine Jeffcoat and senior Madison Payne, each tallying 15 points apiece.
The team played well together, and worked as a team to get things done. Junior Olivia Burgener said that she was “proud of their performance as a whole, [she] thinks that [their] teamwork is really strong, and [they] play really unselfish basketball.”
Senior Kelly O’Flannigan laughed as she discussed what needs to be worked on, “Oh yeah theres a lot. We need to work on our start and just getting going.”
Assistant girls varsity coach Chris Lewis said he was proud of the girls performance. “They really try to focus on defense in practice and thought they really stepped up today. [They] still want to improve on our defensive intensity and our cohesion as a team, as well as getting everyone involved,” Lewis said.
