Recently, concerns over the safety of those who regularly attend educational institutions have arisen in response to recent school shootings that have occurred, namely the tragic events at Sandy Hook. As a result there has been a slew of new rules and safety precautions put in place that will supposedly help prevent these incidents from happening. These include the installation of metal detectors, security cameras and audio monitoring devices, random locker and car searches, screening individuals who do not attend regularly, implementing a police presence on campus and the locking of all doors. Stricter gun laws have also been enacted, and the potential for even greater 2nd amendment restrictions also remain indefinitely dormant. All this does is increase the likelihood of a new black market being created for firearms. All of these measures are irritating, some violate civil and constitutional rights and all of which are completely ineffective, unintelligent and unwarranted. Now it’s never funny when someone dies but letting bureaucrats and fear mongers legislate nonsense laws that reduce our liberty and limit our freedom is an insult to the memory of those who we lost. The earliest recorded school shooting in the US occurred in 1760, before the signing of the Declaration of Independence! Mass shootings in public places and schools have been happening for hundreds and hundreds of years. It’s obvious that these these paranoia-induced, freedom suppressing policies are not going to stop public violence.
