The Broncos have no idea how to manage their money, how to trade for good players, or how to draft. This is why their franchise hasn’t gone anywhere since 2015.
The Broncos struggle because of their lofty expectations. They have to be realistic. When they pick a player in the draft or trade for a player, they hope for someone who will change their program while they have him on contract.
The biggest example is Russell Wilson, who the Broncos signed to a five-year contract for $242 million after trading the world to get him from Seattle. Two first round picks, two second round picks, a 5th round pick, and three players—tight end Noah Fant, quarterback Drew Lock, and defensive end Shelby Harris.
Now, instead of keeping Wilson for the full five years, the Broncos released him from their team and he got picked up by the Steelers as a free agent. This put them $39 million in debt, sinking the Broncos franchise even further because they don’t have any money to trade for skilled players.
They also recently released free safety Justin Simmons, traded wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, and renegotiated wide receiver Tim Patrick’s salary. These moves now have the Broncos looking at $30.5 million dollars in cap space. However, this does not include a two year deal for 9 million to safety P. J… Locke. Trading these players gives the Broncos more cap space, but they will still be limited in comparison to other teams in the free agency market, due to all the money they still owe to Russel Wilson.
If the Broncos want to have a successful season, they need to find a young QB who isn’t washed up and out of their prime. With multiple picks in the upcoming draft, they have a chance to change the franchise for a few years. If they pick up a QB like JJ McCarthy and give Sean Peyton a chance to use his football IQ, they can build a team around a QB who could potentially take this franchise deep into the playoffs.
