It has been eight years since the varsity football team won the league title. But this year, with a new coach and entering a new league, they brought home the title after going undefeated in league play.
“Winning the league was an amazing feeling,” quarterback Riley Montemayor (12) said. “We have had some ups and downs, but this team is great and we put our heads down and worked as hard as possible. That’s what made us league champions.”
Montemayor, quarterback and team captain, showed great determination throughout the season. After tough losses against Broomfield and Fairview, Montemayor’s leadership won them two huge victories against cross-town rival Centaurus and city rival Boulder High School. This success will bring them to a face-off against Bear Creek on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Spangenberg Field. This will be the football team’s first home playoff game since 2016.
“It was definitely something to get used to, being a senior and having a new coach and going into a new league,” Montemayor said. “But the whole team knew that we were good enough to win the league from the start of the season.”
The official switch from the Front Range to the Granite Peaks League opened new opportunities for the team. They have taken advantage of those opportunities throughout the season, only losing twice out of 10 games, with some close battles in between. Those battles ultimately put the team at 8-2 with an impressive 5-0 record in the Granite Peaks League, making them the 10th seed in the state playoffs.
“I have high hopes for playoffs,” Montemayor said. “With the team we have, we could make a deep run into a playoff, which we haven’t done in a while.”
In addition to a new league, the football team is also competing in the 4A division compared to last year’s 5A competition. With a confident team, a confident coach, and a league title, the football team is ready to end their season with success at the 2024 playoffs.
