Everyone has their own unique style, throughout the halls of Monarch you can find students rocking all kinds of looks, band tees and dark eyeliner, high waisted shorts and crop tops, sports jerseys and backwards hats, ball gowns and crowns. That’s right ball gowns. Junior Dendra Cowperthwaite, Monarch’s very own resident princess, is taking everyday fashion to a new level.

“I guess when I come to school I like wearing dresses because at home I do fencing and hard work and building cars and stuff like that, so it’s sort of a way to let my inner girl out. To me wearing dresses to school is the closest thing to being a princess everyday,” said Cowperthwaite.

On any given day you can find Cowperthwaite in one of her many looks, however you are unlikely to see her in the same look twice, as she often gives her dresses away to people who need them more, fixing them for friends who need prom dresses or who just want to feel like a princesses themselves.

“Usually it depends on how many dresses I have at one time, because what ends up happening is when I get a new dress I give one to someone who needs it, so it’s kind of like a recycle thing,” said Cowperthwaite. “I tailor them and make them fit to them so they have a pretty dress that a lot of girls can’t have.”

Now I know what you’re thinking, how can one person possibly have so much confidence? The answer is simple: If you want to be a princess, be a princess, and Cowperthwaite does indeed.

“I have not always had this style. Believe it or not when I was in seventh and eighth grade I was a goth tomboy, I didn’t care about anything, but when I reached high school I finally said screw it, what’s the worst that could happen?” said Cowperthwaite.
