If I tell you that Mason Ramsey is my Roman Empire, you probably won’t know who I’m talking about. That is, at least until I remind you of a blurry video from 2018 of the infamous “Walmart Yodeling Kid.” Decked out in blue jeans, cowboy boots, a shiny belt buckle, and a red bow tie, 11-year-old Mason Ramsey belted out “Lovesick Blues” by Hank Williams in the middle of an Illinois Walmart. After that video went viral, most people forgot about him, but my sister and I found him on Spotify a few years later and discovered the rest of his music—namely, a song called “Twang.” We’ve discovered that it’s easy to find out whether people have a sense of humor by playing it for them. So why is Mason Ramsey my Roman Empire? Well, whenever I meet someone for the first time, the first thing I wonder is if they’d appreciate the ironic glory of his music. If they do, I know it’s worth spending more time with them.
